Tips for Parenting Children Who Prefer
 Perceiving:

  • Give time for moving about. Become bored & unfocused with too much sitting or desk work. (Play “Horse” using spelling words)
  • Shorten their deadlines. Deadlines create a stimulus for ideas to emerge.
  • Create a plan, but keep it loose or in a framework so that they don’t become stressed by the restriction.
  • Allow flexibility in the plan. (That does Not mean adjust the rules of the home)
  • Set a limit on how many projects they work on at one time. But allow them to start more than one. May start too many projects at once & have trouble finishing them
  • Need help managing time. Will need coaching on how to do this, without stifling their natural tendencies.
  • Have as few rules as possible. Rules are seen as barriers, rather guidelines
  • Get an agreement on what the task should be completed and when. Then leave the room and allow the child to achieve the task in their own style. It will be easier on the parent and the child, especially when they differ in preferences
